While widely acknowledged as the world's oldest profession, and often glamorized or demonized in the media, prostitution is a critical part of American culture and its economy, as well as a social problem in need of an updated public policy. Combining feminist social research with legal studies, Lenore Kuo tackles the difficult issues raised by prostitution in the United States. Informed by the risks, needs, and struggles of female prostitutes, Kuo weighs the benefits of different policy approaches including further criminalization of prostitution, full legalization, and decriminalization. Kuo ultimately argues for a unique form of decriminalization which includes mandatory social services such as STD-prevention education, counseling, medical care, prostitution zoning, and protections for foreign prostitutes among others. Kuo's unique, comprehensive, and systematic policy proposals provide an indispensable standard for all future discussions about prostitution.
