Book synopsis

You know a little Python. You have finished a course, or a book, or written a few scripts that do something useful. And you want to make a game. This book is written for that exact moment. Pygame Programming takes you from an empty file to a finished, polished 2D game you can share, one small step at a time. There is no jargon dump and no wall of theory. Every chapter has a single, concrete goal, a handful of lines to type, a program you run to see the result working, a plain-English explanation of what just happened and why, a list of the errors that commonly go wrong at that step with their fixes, and a few exercises to make the lesson stick. Across the twenty-five chapters you build one complete game from scratch: Comet Courier, a top-down space-delivery arcade game. Chapter by chapter it grows from a blank window into a real, shippable product. You add a spaceship that rotates and thrusts with momentum, a layered parallax starfield, asteroids that spawn and drift and spin, fair circle-based collision with a forgiving respawn, and the core cargo-run loop: fly to a station, pick up cargo, deliver it to another station before a timer runs out, and score. Then a heads-up display, particle flames and explosions, sound and music, a title screen and game-over screen, a real menu with clickable buttons and volume sliders, a difficulty curve that ramps over time, ship upgrades you buy with earned credits, and a save file with a top-ten high-score table that survives a crash. Finally, screen shake and transitions for game feel, a chapter on reading errors and debugging, one on performance for beginners, and two on shipping the finished game: as a double-clickable desktop app with PyInstaller, and as a browser game with pygbag that you upload to itch.io. The book is built for pygame-ce, the actively maintained community edition of the library, and it assumes only that you are comfortable with basic Python: functions, classes, lists, and dictionaries. It does not assume you have ever made a game. Three appendices cover installation and setup troubleshooting by platform, a map of the Comet Courier code chapter by chapter, and a beginner-focused Pygame quick reference of every call used in the book. If you have ever opened a Pygame tutorial and gotten stuck staring at a black screen that will not go away, this is the book that gets you unstuck, explains why it happened, and keeps you moving all the way to a game you can send to your friends.
