Role-play has been widely used as a teaching method §in the ESL/EFL classroom. This research aimed to §explore the effects of using role-play activities on §secondary school EFL students, specifically in the §context of Taiwan. The research focuses were placed §on examining students learning motivations, §attitudes, and speaking proficiency. Thirty-two §grade eight students from a single junior high §school in Taichung County were selected and further §involved in the required role-play activities, such §as acting out scripts in class. Both qualitative and §quantitative methods were conducted in this §research. The instruments used in this research §included oral tests, questionnaires, and interviews. §The t-test was used for analyzing the test results. §The results suggested that most of the participants §had positive attitudes/motivation towards these role-§play activities in class; students were more §motivated to learn English; and students made a §significant improvement in their English speaking §proficiency.
