PREFATORY NOTE: In preparing this edition the effort has been directed mainly toward two ends: to make the great hearted man, Walter Scott, and his romantic highland poem seem real and attractive, and to make the pupil do as much of his own thinking as possible. The notes are not to take the place of dictionary and history, but too stimulate interest and thought, while furnishing such accurate information as is not readily attainable elsewhere by the student.
