Book synopsis

By the time the 14 bus pulls up, Amara is already a different person.

Eastside Amara says finna and bet and laughs loud enough for the whole block to hear. Brookline Amara, the one who rides forty minutes across town to the magnet school where the water fountains work, does not. She keeps her voice small, her hand slow, and her checklist running: say "isn't" not "ain't." Don't laugh with your whole chest. Wait a second before you raise your hand.

Amara has been two people since fifth grade. She's good at it. She didn't ask to be good at it. But she is.

Then a small thing at lunch, a comment, a laugh, a text she should have never sent, starts a chain reaction she can't outrun. Her best friend stops speaking to her. A teacher underestimates her out loud. Rent envelopes start showing up on porches all over her block. And Grandma Rose, who has lived on the same street for forty years, finds her house on a developer's map.

Standing in front of a city council microphone with her family's neighborhood on the line, Amara has to figure out which version of her voice is the one that actually matters.

A middle-grade novel about code-switching, gossip, gentrification, and what it costs, and what it protects, to be one whole person in two very different rooms.

Perfect for readers of Ghost, The Crossover, and Look Both Ways. Includes a companion Facilitator Guide, Teacher Guide, and 12-week belonging-centered curriculum aligned to ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors and CASEL competencies, available separately for classroom and counseling use.

Recommended for grades 6 to 10.
