Vitruvius lived within spaces that contained implicitarchitectural codes for him to ponder. He prescribed Romanarchitecture not as he saw it, but rather, as he imagined it. TheRoman architect lived within an urban setting that was highlydynamic and not readily interpreted. Notions related to specificand ideal spaces were stored within the minds of builders and inturn shaped, according to a particular set of pre-existing culturaland built traditions. The corresponding looseness thatcharacterizes the writing of Vitruvius has rendered increasinglyimaginative interpretations.
