Incidences of diabetes are increasing rapidly in§specific populations, and has become a public health§concern in many communities around the world. This§concern includes Punjabi speakers in the South Fraser§Health Region - adjacent to Vancouver, Canada. There§is administrative interest in the health§implications, especially for vulnerable groups, many§of whom are English language low-literate. This study§focuses on determinants of health, low English§language literacy, and the forms of access to health§information about managing a chronic condition. The§discussion includes psychosocial aspects, such as the§'Golden Jail,' whereby the immigrant appears to enjoy§a much better lifestyle, but at a personal and social§cost. The researcher conducted surveys with Punjabi§speaking diabetes patients, with health care§providers and practitioners, and key informants§within the community. Conclusions and recommendations§are included. Although this study focused on a south§Asian community, there are other communities -§worldwide - that may recognize themselves in similar§lived experiences.
