" S'efforcer d'expliquer, comme l'a fait Pie XII, aux survivants de l'Holocauste, la "grande bienveillance de l'Église", et leur rappeler qu' "au milieu de [leurs] angoisses", ils ont "senti les bienfaits et les délicatesses de l'amour", serait une impardonnable arrogance si ces propos étaient émis aujourd'hui " (Michael R. Tout en prenant acte des progrès accomplis depuis la déclaration " Nostra Aetate ", 4 du second concile du Vatican (1965), l'auteur déplore la résurgence d'un discours apologétique visant à justifier à tout prix l'attitude de l'Église envers les Juifs, avant et durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, et il en réfute les arguments à la lumière de documents incontestables. Faisant fond sur des déclarations impressionnantes de repentir de hauts dignitaires catholiques et protestants, qu'il cite largement, il invite les chrétiens à s'inscrire dans cette démarche de vérité, plutôt que de nier ce qui fut regrettable dans l'attitude de la chrétienté d'alors, au risque de tomber dans un révisionnisme historique aussi dommageable pour la cause qu'ils veulent défendre que pour l'Église elle-même. -- Three quotations illustrate the spirit of this book: 'In the Church's communications during Nazi domination, Jews were never explicitly named as such and their persecution never received specific condemnation from the Church,' (Martin Rhonheimer). 'To try to present, as Pius XII did to the survivors of the Holocaust, the "great benevolence of the Church", and to remind them that "in the midst of [their] suffering", they could feel "the benefit and the delicate attentions of love", would be considered unforgiveable arrogance if those words were spoken today,' (Michael R. Marrus). 'The apology [...] is a great consumer of approximations in every domain: its ravages in the order of history and charity are immeasurable.' (Fadiey Lovsky). While bearing in mind the progress made since 'Nostra Aetate', 4 of Vatican II council (1965), the author deplores the resurgence of apologetic arguments attempting to justify at all costs the Church's attitude towards Jews before and during WW2, and he refutes these arguments in the light of incontestable documents. Drawing on impressive declarations of repentance by highly placed Catholic and Protestant dignitaries, which he quotes extensively, he invites Christians to join that search for the truth, rather than deny the regrettable things in the attitude of Christianity at those times and risk falling into a historical revisionism as potentially damaging for the cause they wish to defend as for the Church itself.
