Anotácia knihy

This work examines the common traits of two major divine figures of the Indo-European linguistic world: the Greek goddess Athena and Hindu India’s great goddess, who was known by various names such as Devi, Durga, Parvati, or by one of many local names used in Northern India or in Dekkan. These shared traits relate to the definition of the goddess (a warlike divinity whose duties extend far beyond the mere warrior realm and the existence of a dark and negative side to the goddess), her physical appearance, her attributes, her relations with animals, her myths, her rites, and even a parallelism between the hymns sung to her in India and in ancient Greece. The author offers an analysis of the purpose of the Gorgon and a study of the Panathenaic Games’ religious festivals and of their Indian counterparts. He also explores Athena’s relations with Zeus, Ares, Hephaestus, and with all similar beings which have their equals in Indian Greek mythology.Just as previous works by the same author had shown the close similarities between Athena and the great Celtic goddess (Le Livre des dieux: Celtes et Grecs, Payot, 2004), what emerges from this research is the image of a major Indo-European goddess worshipped not only in India and Greece, but also in the Celtic world.
