Beckenham is first referred to as Bacheham in the Domesday Book of 1086, a name thought to be derived from the Old English 'Beohhan ham' (Beohhan's homestead). Beckenham was originally a rural Kent village, remaining under the control of the Manor of Beckenham until the mid-nineteenth century, when the railway arrived in the area, bringing prosperity and a huge boost in population. Today, Beckenham forms part of the London Borough of Bromley, and is an attractive place to live and visit. For a London suburb, Beckenham is surprisingly leafy, forming part of the South East London Green Chain. The area also plays host to a number of historic buildings, and is home to one of the oldest lych gates in England, dating back to the thirteenth century. Using a beautiful selection of old and new photographs, author Cliff Watkins invites the reader to join him on a nostalgic and picturesque journey through time, telling the fascinating story of how Beckenham has grown into the vibrant community it is today.
