Created on December 17, 1904, on the back page of the "Indianapolis News", Abe Martin became one of the most popular cracker-barrel philosophers this country has ever known. Abe appeared in perhaps 8000 drawings, uttered 16,000 sayings, and wrote about 1000 Short Furrows (or humorous essays). He also spawned an imaginary community, Bloom Center (Brown County, Indiana), and peopled it with many neighbors - typical country characters such as Fawn Lippincut, Editor Cale Fluhart, Mame Moon, Miss Tawney Apple, Squire marsh Swallow, Constable Newt Plum, and others. The humorous and sometimes painful lines of Abe and his neighbors were exchanged in the Bloom Center Weekly "Sliphorn", edited by Fluhart. "The Best of Kin Hubbard" contains the very best sayings, humorous essays, cartoons, drawings, and a representative sample of Abe's 'almanack'.
