Two of the most common cataract surgery procedures include phacoemulsification (phaco) and extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE). In the process of extracapsular cataract extraction, almost the entire natural lens is removed but the elastic lens capsule is left intact to allow the implantation of an intraocular lens.
