Anotácia knihy

In this work, Alain Boureau expands upon his study of medieval scholastic thought, demonstrating that the latter offers one of the rare moments in which humanity, weighed down by diverse and contradictory interpretations (ancient, Jewish, Arab and Christian philosophies) feels the need for an unimpeded, in-depth and open-ended analysis. How can a human be one, or house a mind in one body ? Before the advent of psychoanalysis, no question as radical as that had ever been asked. This book’s point of departure is the chronicle of a core debate on man’s inner faculties, in which the topic under discussion is the soul’s powers, based upon a scholarly teaching approach greatly influenced by Aristotle (284–322 BC). The author next examines the question of the soul’s duality in the works of Jean de La Rochelle, a Franciscan theologian who, in the 1230s, produced a cartography of man’s fragmentation which emphasized the revolutionary concept of the passion of the soul,. Through this account, he describes an essential aspect of medieval thought, the quest to find a substitute for the subject’s double and the resulting alienation which that effort caused. These doubles, in terms of divine imagery, are angels – companions and possible successors of human beings – women, who even serve as doubles within the human race, and, lastly, the devil, who is the consummate double.De vagues individus is the third part of the author’s trilogy, La Raison scolastique, the two preceding parts of which were La Religion de l’État (2006) and L’Empire du livre (2007).
