Anotácia knihy

When the world's most renowned neurologist, Elias Mercer, cannot save the life of the most powerful man on Earth, he receives a sentence reserved for no one before him: a one-way mission into Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. He enters the darkness. No one expects him to come back.

He wakes on a black shore beneath the wrong stars, with no memory, no language, and no self - only the raw fact of sensation and an inextinguishable instinct to understand what is happening to him.

Ex Nihilo follows Elias as he rebuilds consciousness from first principles: learning to eat, to shelter, to think, to grieve, and finally to speak - first to himself, then to the inhabitants of Aruun, a vast city carved vertically into canyon walls, built from the bodies of its own dead, populated by a species for whom emotion is involuntary and permanent, and lying is structurally impossible.

The Veyru are not human. They do not experience private thought, romantic secrecy, or singular grief. Their dead reintegrate into the living architecture of the city. Their collective consciousness hums through the biology of an entire world. And Elias - opaque, boundaried, sealed behind a face that broadcasts nothing - is the most terrifying thing they have ever encountered.
But in Talar, a scholar of consciousness who watches him with the specific attention of someone who has decided the world is more interesting than it is threatening, Elias finds something he did not expect to find inside a black hole: a person who understands him. Quickly. Completely. And whose understanding costs more than either of them can anticipate.

As Elias's rebuilt body begins to fail - an approximation of the original, flawed at the level of its deepest architecture - he must confront not only his own mortality but the mystery encoded into the substrate of this world itself: that this universe is not what he thought, that something ancient built it from the inside, that the boundary of the black hole's interior geometry is also the boundary between death and what comes after, and that the science he destroyed his career rejecting may be the only instrument capable of reading what cannot speak for itself.

Ex Nihilo is a novel about consciousness - what it is, what constitutes a self, what survives death, and what is lost when a mind is silenced before it can be heard. It is about a man who spent his life certain of his own precision and learned, too late and not too late, that the question of whether someone is home is always worth asking. And it is about the fall - into a black hole, into a body, into love, into the irreducible particular weight of being someone rather than no one - which turns out, against all reasonable expectation, to be the same fall every time.

For readers of Ted Chiang, Peter Watts, and Stanislaw Lem.
