The surface geography and geology of a re gion must first be understood if one is to seriously discuss the botanical or zoological life. The character of the soil determines to a large extent the general character of the vegetation, and the surface irregularities will indicate the nature of the zoological life. In a region where roads, fences, houses, and similar works Of man are absent, a knowledge Of the country is all the more important in order to get over the country. Since much Of the country is as yet unexplored the physiography Of the region will be especially interesting to those working at the station.
