This title is a psycho-social examination of the changing relationships between service users, professionals and managers in the post-war welfare state. Its original approach bridges the practitioner/policy divide by reversing the traditional lens of social policy. The book traces the connections between states of mind, relationships, culture and politics in successive phases of the post-war welfare state. These include the social democratic collectivism, the neo-liberal inspired Thatcher/Major years, and the "third way" mixed economy of care as promoted by New Labour. It also identifies an emergent fourth paradigm in which demands from below inform a politics of active or participatory welfare. The text is illustrated with examples rooted in practice experience. "Love, hate and welfare": characterises psychosocial dimensions of social citizenship, consumerism and partnerships; develops practice-based perspectives on changing social relations of care; discusses the psychic dimensions of entitlement, risk, responsibility, compassion and dependency in the welfare system; develops a grid to illustrate the changing relations between interpersonal, institutional and political dimensions of welfare; explores the potential contribution of psychoanalytic concepts to social policy and practice.
