Anotácia knihy

This title is a psycho-social examination of the changing relationships between service users, professionals and managers in the post-war welfare state. Its original approach bridges the practitioner/policy divide by reversing the traditional lens of social policy. The book traces the connections between states of mind, relationships, culture and politics in successive phases of the post-war welfare state. These include the social democratic collectivism, the neo-liberal inspired Thatcher/Major years, and the "third way" mixed economy of care as promoted by New Labour. It also identifies an emergent fourth paradigm in which demands from below inform a politics of active or participatory welfare. The text is illustrated with examples rooted in practice experience. "Love, hate and welfare": characterises psychosocial dimensions of social citizenship, consumerism and partnerships; develops practice-based perspectives on changing social relations of care; discusses the psychic dimensions of entitlement, risk, responsibility, compassion and dependency in the welfare system; develops a grid to illustrate the changing relations between interpersonal, institutional and political dimensions of welfare; explores the potential contribution of psychoanalytic concepts to social policy and practice. This book should stimulate debates around welfare theory. It will be of interest to students on social policy and social work courses and should be read by all those who have an interest in the development of more responsive welfare institutions, including policy-makers, professionals and academics.
