Managing the Long Term Care Facility: Practical Approaches to Providing Quality Care provides a a complete introduction to this dynamic field. It covers the continuum of long term care, biological and psychosocial aspects of aging, organizational structure of long term care, marketing and public relations, facility operations and quality management, physical plant, finance and risk management, human resources, ethical and legal issues, resident-centered care (including advocacy and diversity), health care information systems, and policy. Each chapter includes pedagogical elements to help guide students through the content, as well as summaries and discussion questions to drive home lessons learned. The book uses a competency-based approach, based on the American College of Health Care Executives (ACHE) Competencies Assessment Tool and the Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA) Competency Directory. It also is designed to help students prepare for the National Nursing Home Administrator exam, for which the author is qualified as founder of AIT Exam Prep, which helps Administrators in Training (AITs) prepare for both the California and National Nursing Home Administrator licensure exams. The number of Americans age 65 and over is projected to grow from 40.2 million in 2010 to 88.5 million by the year 2050 per the U.S. Census Bureau. As people age their need for long-term care increases and this condition places them into one of the most vulnerable segments of our society. Currently, books are available addressing the long-term care continuum but none address the skilled nursing facility care from a practical perspective, despite this being the most common type of long term care facility and the one with which most health care administrators are most likely to have some experience Thus there is a need for a book which will educate college students, preceptors, and administrators-in-training in practical approaches to providing good quality care that positively impacts quality of life. This book will describe the levels of care available to people and discuss in particular the complexity of skilled nursing care which covers both short-term and long-term stays for residents.
