Romney Marsh is the largest coastal wetland on the south coast of England. It is formed from several linked marshes. The Marsh has had a long and complex natural history of formation and alteration which has given rise to very variable geological deposits across its area. The Marsh has been exploited and adapted by man for over 8,000 years with a number of surveys in recent years focusing on historical research, field survey and archaeological excavation. Extensive work was undertaken in advance of gravel extraction near to one of the Marshes historic towns; New Romney. Prior to excavation very little had been found in the immediate area, however, excavation showed evidence of Bronze Age and Roman activity, although, the main focus of the excavation was archaeological evidence relating to the 11th and 12th centuries.
