Studies on Mexican migration to the US differ as to§whether immigrants are drawn from the bottom or the§top of the education distribution of Mexico. This§book presents evidence that shows that in the year§1994, Mexican males age 25 to 58 were drawn§disproportionately from the middle-to-upper end of§the Mexican education distribution. The book also§shows that the expected US-Mexico wage differential§explains partially this fact, because this§differential is the highest for Mexicans with medium§levels of education. Then, it also explores the§possibility that a differential value in family§support to the unemployed could explain the lower§propensity to migrate observed in the less educated.§The book also explores whether the return migration§of Mexicans in the US to Mexico can explain the lower§propensity to migrate. It shows that the larger§return rates observed among the less educated are§potentially explained by higher savings and a§stronger preference for consumption in Mexico§relative to the more educated. The book is intended§for people interested in Migration and Economics§including researchers, students and policy makers.
