The airline industry is increasingly in the spotlight withregards to its impact on the environment. Given the variousinternal, external and cultural pressures facing airlines in theirday-to-day operations, what motivates some airlines to be greenerthan others? This study examines the literature on the greening ofcorporations in the context of the airline industry and usesScandinavian Airlines (SAS) as an in-depth case study that exploresthe airline\'s drivers for environmental commitment. Two keydecisions that were made within SAS (one involving the purchase ofa new aircraft fleet and the other the launch of a new inflightservice concept) are used to demonstrate how environmental issueswere taken into consideration in the airline\'s decision-makingprocess. Although various studies have looked at aviation\'simpacts on the environment, this is one of the first studies toexamine the internal management processes used to develop companypolicies in the airline industry.
