Over the last two decades, Japanese filmmakers have produced some of the most important and innovative works of cinematic horror. At once visually arresting, philosophically complex, and politically charged, films by directors like Tsukamoto Shinya (ITetsuo: The Iron Man/I [1988] and ITetsuo II: Body Hammer/I [1992]), Sato Hisayasu (IMuscle/I [1988] and INaked Blood/I [1995]) Kurosawa Kiyoshi (ICure/I [1997], ISéance/I [2000], and IKaďro/I [2001]), Nakata Hideo (IRingu/I [1998], IRingu II/I [1999], and IDark Water/I [2002]), and Miike Takashi (IAudition/I [1999] and IIchi the Killer/I [2001]) continually revisit and redefine the horror genre in both its Japanese and global contexts.
