This book contains selected papers from the symposium Operations Research 2007 which was held from September 5-7, 2007 at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany. This international conference, which also serves as the annual meeting of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), attracted over 450 participants from more than thirty countries.§In Germany as in other countries, the transition from a production orientation to a service society, combined with a continuous demographic change, has generated a need for intensified Operations Research activities in this area. Consequently, this conference was devoted to the role of Operations Research in the service industry.
