Auteur juif contemporain du Christ, Philon d'Alexandrie appartient à un milieu culturel d'une richesse exceptionnelle, dont la complexité défie ses commentateurs actuels. Philon est-il fondamentalement juif, puisque son œuvre consiste principalement en commentaires du Pentateuque ? Ou son dessein était-il de " traduire " l'Écriture en termes philosophiques grecs pour la rendre intelligible au milieu culturel grec dans lequel il baignait, et toute la ville d'Alexandrie avec lui ? Nos érudits contemporains se sont penchés sur la question, insistant le plus souvent sur son " hellénisation " de la foi judaïque. Mais le grand intérêt de notre auteur est, justement, de n'avoir abandonné aucun des deux côtés de son héritage, ni sa foi ni sa culture. C'est à ce titre, en tout cas, qu'il a influencé les premiers chrétiens, appelés après lui et dans son sillage à exprimer leur foi dans le même contexte philosophique. L'omniprésence de la pensée hellénique, sorte d'écrin dans lequel s'insère la foi de Philon, rend cependant la lecture de son œuvre plus ardue parce que cette culture nous est devenue quelque peu étrangère, sauf à en être spécialistes. Le but que Mariette Canévet s'est donné ici est d'essayer de sortir de sa gangue cette spiritualité remarquable. C'est pourquoi elle n'a pas hésité à émailler son propre texte de larges extraits des œuvres du philosophe, de ces extraits dont on goûte la beauté et la profondeur, pour rendre Philon accessible à un large public car il le mérite, et de le proposer comme un possible maître spirituel. -- A Jewish author and contemporary of Christ, Philo of Alexandria belonged to an exceptionally rich cultural milieu whose complexity still constitutes a challenge for today's scholars. Is Philo fundamentally Jewish, because his work consists mainly in commenting the Pentateuch? Or was his aim to 'translate' texts written in Greek philosophical terms, making them intelligible to the Greek cultural environment he lived in and to all of Alexandria? Modern scholars have studied this question, most often insisting on his 'Hellenization' of the Jewish faith. But what makes this author really interesting is that he maintained both sides of his heritage, faith and culture. In this way he influenced the first Christians who were called upon to express their faith in his wake, and in the same philosophical context. The omnipresence of Hellenic thought, which provided the setting for Philo's faith, makes his work more difficult to read since this culture has become slightly unfamiliar to non-specialists. In this book, Mariette Canévet's aim is to free this remarkable spirituality from its gangue. In order to make Philo accessible to the wider public he deserves to reach, and to present him as a possible spiritual master, she does not hesitate to enrich her own text with large excerpts from the philosopher's work, whose beauty and depth readers will savour.
