In everyday language we usually ask two questions which indicate, in a general way, what is commonly understood with regard to mental activity, namely, when we ask someone what is on your mind, or what is going on in your head? The first question assumes an implicit recognition of mental faculties such as thought, memory, imagination, etc., with whose operations we are all familiar; and the second question assumes that there is a place where these faculties would be somehow located, namely, in the head. However, this common knowledge is vague and imprecise, in attempting to explain the origin, consistency, characteristics and qualities of mental phenomena, but above all in attempting to define what the mind itself would be, since it cannot clearly distinguish these mental phenomena from those that would correspond to such notions as "soul", "consciousness", "ego", "brain", etc.
