It isbecauseofthisgapintheliteraturethatthecurrentbookPractitioner sGuideto SymptomBaseRatesintheGeneralPopulationandthepreviousbookPractitioner s GuidetoSymptomBaseRatesinClinicalNeuropsychology(McCaVreyetal. 2003) werecreated. Ifthediagnosticaccuracyofourclinicaldecision-makingprocessand ourtestinginstrumentsaretobeestimated,wemustcalculatethebaseratesofthe symptoms,disorders,anddiseasesweassessforonaregularbasis. Itishopedthatthepresentbookwillaidneuropsychologicalpractitionersand otherhealthcareprofessionalsintheevaluationofthepresentingcomplaintsoftheir patients. Baseratesareofutmostimportanceintheestimationofdiagnosticaccuracy ofneuropsychologicalandpsychologicalassessment,aswellasanyotherformof testing,aswellasintheinterviewanddiVerentialdiagnosticprocess. Itishopedthat thesetwovolumeswillencourageadditionalresearcherstoreportbaserateinfor- tion as well as detailed information regarding the population from which this informationwasobtained.
