Excerpt from The Remedial Uses of Hypnotism: An Essay Read at the Annual Meeting of the Maine Medical Association, 9th June, 1892 The author expressly wishes it understood that, in issuing this article in pamphlet form, he is not in the least actuated by a desire to enlarge his practice in the neurological line, his special taste lying in an altogether different direction. Having found himself apparently alone among his immediate associates in his appreciation of the therapeutic value of hypnotism, he has endeavored in the past year to interest his fellow practitioners in this little-understood remedy, and this paper is one of the means adopted for that purpose. As, however, the transactions of the Maine Medical Association, to which the article was contributed, will reach only a part of the friends to whom he wishes to communicate his views and report his observations, he has had the essay put into its present form in the hope that the profession will more generally be persuaded to examine the subject in a judicial spirit, and afford the community the advantages to be derived from a proper application of hypnotic suggestion.
