This collection of newly commissioned essays from an international team of scholars provides new insights and appreciation of those philosophers traditionally named as Socratics (or minor Socratics) and their philosophical views. Taken together the essays show that the Socratics were important figures in Greek philosophy and that their views are philosophically relevant, both in themselves as well as in the content of ancient philosophy. The first part of the book discusses methodology and sources, including the elusive concept of a "Socratic school" and the importance of evidence from the Herculeanum payyri. The second part focuses on the key doctrines of some of the Socratics including Antisthenes, Phaedo of Elis, the Megarian thinker Polixenos, and the Cyrenaics. The final part of the book explores to what extent the Socratics and their philosophical ideas were understood and discussed by other philosophers, notably Plato, Aristotle and Pyrrho.
