In expositions of the work of Karl Polanyi, attention has focused upon a very narrow corpus. The central aim of 'The Unknown Karl Polanyi' is to critically explore the full range of Polanyi's contribution to the social sciences. It exposits and analyses his philosophy of science, his theory of international relations, his economic historiography of the ancient world, and his evolving relationship with Marxism. It elucidates the reasons for his support for Stalin's regime in Russia and studies his interventions into debates on the nature of fascism, totalitarianism, capitalism and democracy, as well as his attitude to McCarthyism and his engagement with 'Cold War liberalism.' The volume's primary source base includes interviews with Polanyi's friends and students and his daughter, Kari Polanyi-Levitt, as well as his unpublished writings and correspondence archived at Concordia University, the Szechenyi Library in Budapest and the University of Chicago.
