The study examines the role of the Catholic church as a political actor on the basis of its engagement for undocumented immigrants in the United States and Germany. Its primary focus is the professional knowledge and self-conception of church employees who frequently communicate the Catholic position on immigration law and immigration reform towards lawmakers, church members, and the general public. The study employs elite interviewing as well as participant observation and merges these with a specifically theological perspective on qualitative data.
