The East End of Scotland's largest city stretches from Glasgow Cross in the ancient centre to the border with North and South Lanarkshire. Home to famous sites such as the Necropolis Cemetery, Barrowland Ballroom and 'the Barras', this corner of Glasgow was formerly an important industrial centre. Textile manufacturers James Templeton & Co. and engineers Sir William Arrol & Co. were once based here, only to close in 1979 and 1986 respectively as a result of industrial decline. In July 2014, the Commonwealth Games arrived to Glasgow, and developments took place across the city in preparation for their arrival. Ambitious regeneration projects sprang up all over the East End, including the Athletes' Village, which now forms part of the lasting legacy as new social housing. The Scottish National Indoor Sports Arena in Dalmarnock, which replaced the old Kelvin Hall, is another one of the many changes seen in the area.
