Aus purem Trotz heiratet Elja viel zu früh den sie naiv vergötternden Tolik und zieht mit ihm zu seinen Eltern in ein russisches Provinznest. Als sie an der Langeweile des Kleinstadtlebens zu ersticken droht, verliebt sich Elja in den Schauspieler Igor, der so wunderschön Lermontow rezitiert. Sie zieht mit ihm nach Moskau. Aber Igor ist Alkoholiker und hat seit Jahren keine guten Rollen mehr gespielt ...§ Out of defiance, Elja marries Tolik who naively idolizes her, and moves with him to his parents in a Russian provincial one-horse town. When she is in danger of choking out of pure boredom, she falls in love with the actor Igor and follows him to Moscow. This love affair too ends abruptly when she gets to know the psychiatrist Ivan and experiences her true love which, however, ends as a complete failure like her earlier relationships. Out of pure desperation Elja marries the next best Westerner and moves to the 'Golden West' with him. Yet she soon finds out that this 'Paradise', too, is not the solution to her problems.§
