Infection and inflammation are not synonymous. Infection is caused by an exogenous pathogen while inflammation is the response of an organization to exposure to that pathogen. Without inflammation wounds and infections would never heal, but unchecked inflammation can lead to such diseases as hay fever, atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
