Holed up in an abandoned flat in disputed territory in Jerusalem are two Israeli solders and their Captain, along with a Texan fundamentalist and the widow of a Rabbi, who are under the Captain's 'protection'. The two soldiers have been brutalised by their experiences, as has the Captain, though he maintains a thin veneer of civility towards his charges. As it emerges that the woman's husband was gunned down while preaching religious hatred in New York and that the Texan is collecting funds to destroy the Al-Aqsa mosque, the hostility of the soldiers becomes enflamed - with terrifying consequences. "Petrol Jesus Nightmare No. 5" is a vision of hell at the warring heart of opposing faiths. Dehumanised by conflict and extremism, its characters wade waist-deep in the detritus of a once civilised way of life. Premiered by the Traverse Theatre as one of their two headline shows, it stands every chance of being the most talked about play of this year's Edinburgh Festival.
