This work is suitable for clarinet (and bass clarinet), and cello. Towards the end of his life, the Spanish painter Goya completed a series of works now known as "The Black Paintings". "Saturno" is the most horrifying of them all, and the composer writes: "The piece makes a dramatic use of extremes of register and dynamics. According to mythology, Saturn is devouring his own sun and fearful of being usurped."
