Mrs. Grant, or Aunt Bethany as she was oftener called, had a maiden sister somewhat older than herself and though Mary had not seen this lady more than once, and even then at a safe distance, she could not think of an introduction to her without dismay. Some may perhaps regard this last sentence as a blunder, and think I should have said, Though she had seen her very often. But not so; on the contrary, if she had seen her oftener she would have been still more alarmed. For it was found invariably to be the case, that the more one saw of Aunt Rebecca the greater was his awe and admiration.
