The World Health Organization has recently emphasized the importance of adopting a public health approach to prevent the onset or worsening of disabilities, reduce the risks of co-occurring medical conditions, and ameliorate health disparities among those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).  Yet, even in the context of alarmingly high prevalence rates associated with malleable environmental risk factors, the field of IDD research has yet to systematically integrate a prevention science approach to the promotion of health and well-being. Many, including those featured in this volume, are, in fact, conducting applied translational research to promote well-being and prevent secondary health and behavioral problems for those with IDD. However, few conducting this research refer to their work as “prevention science” and are unfamiliar with established prevention science principles and frameworks. This volume will first introduce the field of prevention science and discuss its potential for integration into applied IDD research. Subsequent papers will then illustrate specific examples of applied IDD research that address important issues in prevention science including intervention design, cultural adaptations of IDD interventions, qualitative approaches to understanding factors that affect implementation fidelity, and creative approaches to engaging individuals with IDD in prevention research. We hope that this volume will serve as a catalyst for continued application of prevention science frameworks to applied research for the promotion the health and well-being of those with IDD.
